43-year-old Thanaseelan Muniandy was arrested on 21 February 2017 for alleged burglary in Bukit Beruntung, Hulu Selangor. He was supposed to be remanded for four days.
While Thanaseelan’s wife claimed that he was due to be released, he was found unconscious in his cell on 25 February 2017 — the last day of his remand order — at the Bukit Sentosa police station. He was later declared dead at Hospital Sungai Buloh.
A post-mortem on Thanaseelan found that he had died from blood poisoning due to a “perforated gastric ulcer” despite being brought to the Kuala Kubu Baru Hospital a day before his death.
According to lawyer Eric Paulsen, it was unknown as to whether Thanaseelan received a full physical examination on 24 February 2017, or whether he was just given antacids to manage the pain. Thanaseelan had been suffering from chronic gastritis before his arrest.
Nonetheless, reports revealed that the deceased was taken back to the police station after the hospital visit where he remained in detention.
